An original 45-minute opera by local composer, Valarie Morris. This benefit performance recognizes the UN’s International Holocaust Remembrance Day and proceeds go to support the New Mexico Holocaust & Intolerance Museum .

Also on the program is the Fifth Symphony of Dimitri Shostakovich, echoing the times of war and despair of World War II. The premiere in November 1937 was a “triumphal success” that appealed to both the public and “official” Soviet critics, receiving an ovation that lasted well over half an hour.
On Saturday, February 1st, 6pm in Popejoy Hall on the campus of the University of New Mexico. KHFM’s Alexis Corbin will host a pre-concert talk at 5pm.
Power Concert: Fire & Ice

This series is geared toward introducing young audience members and their families to classical music, the orchestra, and the instruments that make it all possible. In the second Power Concert of the season, the questioning of Charles Ives is paired with the determination and grit of Dmitri Shostakovich.
