Obscura Gallery Presents:

Chimères et Merveilles 

Featuring the work of French artist Coco Fronsac who paints non-European masks onto Western vernacular photographs from the early 20th Century. A dichotomy is developed between the early forms from the continents of Africa, Oceania, America, and Asia, and the standardized nature of photographic portraits as they occurred a century ago.

Richard Levy Gallery Presents:

Trio

An exhibition of vibrant, abstract paintings by Justin N. Kim, Gregory Lomayesva, and Nicholas Valdés. An introduction of  three new painters to the gallery’s program and a celebration of abstraction, surface, color, and texture from three unique perspectives.

Comrades

A collaborative exhibition and an artistic celebration of Albuquerque’s creative spirit and cultural diversity, featuring the works of Jesse Littlebird, Ruben Cantu, and others, eleven artists in total. From contemporary painting and sculpture to pop art and mixed-media, this show highlights the creative bonds shared by the artists as they explore identity, place, and the rich cultural landscape of northern New Mexico.

Bowers recently suffered the sudden loss of a beloved pet, and out of the grief and shock she produced works of immense, lush beauty exploring her relationship with herbal cures and how they help her through tough times—like the loss of a friend.

Our Presence

Featuring the artwork of four New Mexican artists. Timothy Hooton is an Albuquerque native and sculptor. Leo Neufeld is a painter who has been studying and creating art for most of his life. Dan Paulos is a paper cut artist whose passion is sharing the history of the Holocaust. Aaron Richardson is a modern realist/expressionist painter who resides in Albuquerque.

Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian has:

Carved Stories

Featuring the artwork of Hopi artist, Mavasta Honyouti who is an award winning carver. This exhibition features 16 carved panels featured in the bilingual (Hopi/English) children’s book published by Honyouti called Coming Home:  A Hopi Resistance Story. Honyouti comes from a family of carvers and work by his father, uncle, and brother are on view as well.

Carved Stories is on view through Saturday, April 12th at Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian.

Pablita’s Wardrobe: Family & Fashion

This exhibition showcases the clothing of Pueblo artist Pablita Velarde along with that of her daughter, Helen Hardin and granddaughter, Margarete Bagshaw who were both artists as well.

Loving

An exhibition featuring photographs by Grey Villet of Richard and Mildred Loving, the interracial couple who won their landmark case at the U.S. Supreme court for their right to be married. That case decision paved the way decades later for same-sex marriage

Zane Bennett Contemporary Art has:

Rereading Geometric Abstraction

Featuring a showcase of prints from the Zane Bennett collection that can be broadly categorized as geometric abstraction. While the heyday of geometric abstraction has passed, there are many contemporary artists reviving the visual signatures of the movement to bring attention to historically overlooked forms of art, such as Pueblo pottery and Northern Cheyenne weaving.

Rereading Geometric Abstraction will be on view through Saturday, April 19th at Zane Bennett Contemporary Art.

Black & White

An exhibition of monochromatic prints and sculptures by Matt Magee pulled from Tamarind Institute, Woolworth Publications, Manneken Press, Obee Editions, and the artist’s studio.

The Museum of International Folk Art has:

Amidst Cries from the Rubble:  Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine

An exploration of life in war-torn Ukraine through art featuring more than 60 works including a newly commissioned photographic series, “Wrapping Art-Art of Salvation” by photographer Marta Syrko. The exhibition presents a reflection on the enduring strength of the Ukrainian people. 

Amidst Cries from the Rubble:  Art of Loss and Resilience from Ukraine runs through Sunday, April 20th, at the Museum of International Folk Art. 

Between the Lines

An exhibition that aims to humanize the incarcerated by showcasing 200 pieces of artwork, multimedia pieces, and community events. The show consists of works from the museum’s collection as well as from the Penitentiary of New Mexico Inmate Craftsmanship & Trades Fair, a local prisoner’s rights organization.

Between the Lines is on view through Tuesday, September 2nd at Museum of International Folk Art.

INgqikithi Yokuphica/Weavings Meanings:  Telephone Wire Art from South Africa

An exhibition of a South African tradition that spans nearly 100 years. A large part of the exhibit features Zulu artwork and many of the artists have shown their work at the International Folk Art Market.

Mariposa Gallery has:

Vessels

A solo exhibition of the work of artist, Suzanne Sbarge. It encompasses two bodies of work that combine abstract painting with collage. She gained inspiration from an artist’s residency in Mexico alongside 14 other artists.

Vladem Contemporary at the New Mexico Museum of Art has:

Off Center:  New Mexico Art 1970-2000

Featuring more than 125 works by New Mexico artists in recent decades. It is the first major showcase of artwork specifically from New Mexico as a whole. The exhibition will go through five partial rotations to capture as much of the theme and as many of the influential artists as possible.

Nicholas Herrera:  El Rito Santero

Master Santero, Nicholas Herrera started carving wood at the age of 12. His family settled northern New Mexico 6 generations ago. He mixes car parts, paint, and wood to create art in Northern New Mexico.

National Hispanic Cultural Center has:

Rendered Presence:  Artistas de Nuevo Mexico 

The exhibition explores artworks by 13 artists, living and working throughout New Mexico including painters, photographers, artists working with textiles and other soft sculpture forms. Each artists explores identify and the self, art history, and the expanse of Hispanic, Chicano, & Latino contemporary art.

Hagege is a contemporary artist based in Los Angeles renowned for his captivating portrayals of the American Southwest. Trained at a Southern California Academy where he honed his skills with live models, his work is grounded in classical technique.
